Alice Janet Milam Farmer was born to Tommie and Jewel Milam on August 27, 1946 and passed away on August 22, 2018. In between, she was loved by many and gave much love in return.
Alice was born in Hidalgo County and grew up the baby of four girls. As a child, she developed polio which was very scary for her family. But she overcame it and went on to become the poster child for the Texas March of Dimes. It was during these years that Alice, nicknamed Doodlebug and Toots, began a lifelong love for animals. She loved all kinds - cats, dogs, horses. Alice always had a pet or two around. It was a part of her life that brought her great joy.
Another part of her life that brought her great joy were people. Alice was a people person. She moved to Lagarto in 2001 and became a good friend to many in the community. She loved nothing more than to sit and be in the company of all who grew to love her in Lagarto. One time, a fire threatened to destroy Lagarto. Many firefighters and emergency personnel rushed out there and worked tirelessly to put the fire out. Alice, wanting to help, cooked up big pots of food and made sure the workers had plenty to eat. They were so touched by her efforts, that they presented her with an award to express their thanks. Alice loved people. And they loved her back.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Tommie and Jewel. Her sister Sue passed away in 2001.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas Farmer of Lagarto and Michael Cox of South Dakota; one granddaughter, Leighanne Farmer; one great-granddaughter, Rain Storm Chiupka of Tennessee; and two sisters, Mae Elsik of Alice and Bea Newton of Red Oak. Besides her family who loved her so, Alice will be greatly missed by her many friends in Lagarto, Texas. They brought a lot of love and joy to her, and she did the same for them.
