David Chapa Obituary

David P. Chapa, age 70 of Harlingen, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his Family on Monday, May 8, 2023.  He was born January 27, 1953, in Alice, Texas to Gabriel and Lydia (Lilia) Chapa.

David was a proud Coyote graduate of Alice High School Class of 1971.  He continued his education as a graduate of Texas A&I University-Kingsville for Marketing and University of Texas-Brownsville for Accounting.  He married his darling, Graciela Liguez Chapa, in 1974 and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage and had two sons, Andy and Gabe.  He served his family in his careers at the United Parcel Service for 20+ years and the Internal Revenue Service-Harlingen for 20+ years.

He would often reminisce about his high school days as being the Running Back for the Alice Coyote Football team and was known as “The Comet” by his fellow classmates. He participated in the National Senior Olympics 50+ and placed 2nd in the 100-yard dash. He learned how to fly a plane and opened a business of miniature golf.  He enjoyed his life by umpiring little league games, golfing and watching his football teams, Houston Oilers, Notre Dame, and the Alice Coyotes.  He loved art, history, making T-Shirt designs, and enjoying the comfort of his cats and dogs.  He cherished his time with his family by traveling to Las Vegas, DisneyLand, and other destinations along with following his son Andy to all his musical gigs. He had the pleasure of meeting Muhammad Ali, Earl Campbell, and Tiger Woods.  One of his biggest thrills was being approached by a talent agent to impersonate Jake Blues of The Blues Brothers and being pictured with Muhammad Ali in The Valley Morning Star.  David was devout in his Catholic Faith and he extended the gift of his life that God bestowed him to many others by being an Organ Donor.

David is preceded in death by his Father, Gabriel Chapa; Niece, Clarissa Chapa; Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law, Mr. and Mrs. Tomas and Luisa Liguez; Brother-in-Laws and Sister-in-Laws, Mr. and Mrs. Porfirio and Esmeralda Carbajal, Mr. and Mrs. Ramon and Belia Guzman, and Mr. Tomas Liguez Jr; and many other departed family members.

Left to cherish his memories is his dearly beloved wife, Graciela Chapa, his two devoted sons, Andrew  (Andy) and Gabriel (Gabe) Chapa, and Brother and Sister-in-Law, George and Hope Chapa, along with numerous Family and Friends.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Holmgreen Mortuary.
