Doris "Dee" Stalter Obituary

Doris “Dee” Lee Stalter, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, earned her angel wings on May 31, 2024.  She was surrounded by family and her husband of 71 years as she peacefully returned to her heavenly home.

Dee was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 26, 1933, to the late Ira Church Jared, Jr. and Dorothy Kindred Jared.  In 1947 she met William “Bill” Butler Stalter as she was walking home from Greiner Middle School in Dallas.  Bill often ate Fritos and drank a Coca-Cola after school, looking out the window of his house on Montreal Avenue in Oak Cliff.  A cute brunette girl – Dee – caught his eye as she walked home from school each day along Montreal Avenue.  One day, about the time he anticipated Dee to walk by his house, Bill decided to go outside and water the lawn so he could say “hi” as she passed by.  And the rest, as they say, is history… a beautiful love story that spanned eight decades.

Dee’s parents moved to Corpus in 1950, and Doris attended Del Mar College and earned her Associate Degree in Home Economics while Bill attended Texas A&M University and earned his degree in Architectural Design.  Bill and Dee were married at First Christian Church in Corpus Christi on May 31, 1953.

In 1954, during the Korean War and after his graduation from Texas A&M as an Air Force Lieutenant, Bill was assigned to the U. S. 47th Bomb Wing at Royal Air Force “RAF” Sculthorpe in England as the Air Installations Officer.  Dee journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean on the SS United States to join Bill in England in December 1954.  She volunteered as a part of the “Gray Ladies” (the American Red Cross Hospital and Recreation Corps) at the base hospital, not only helping the wounded airmen, but often learning of upcoming “surprise deployments” and other important base news before the officers and enlisted men were informed.

Upon returning to the United States in 1956, Bill and Dee made Corpus Christi their home, where they would spend the rest of their lives raising their family, operating Bill’s architecture business where Dee was his office manager, and being active in their church.  At First Christian Church they spent 35 years as Sunday School teachers, impacting the little lives of countless children who attended their 5th and 6th grade Sunday School classes.  Both Bill and Dee also served as Deacons, Elders, and Elders Emeritus of First Christian Church.

Dee is survived by her loving husband Bill; her daughters Carrie Lee (David S.) Hiser and Laurie Dee (Donald R.) Lawhorne; grandchildren Nicholas Scott (Savanna) Hiser and Dana Lee Hiser; and great granddaughter Joanna Lee Hiser.

The family is especially grateful for the loving care and tender affection shown to Dee by the wonderful staff of Amazing Grace Private Senior Home and the New Century Hospice nurses and staff.
