Elia "YaYa" Mendoza

Elia “Yaya” Mendoza, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at The Premier of Alice Nursing Home. She was born on April 23, 1932 in Alice, Texas to Jose Gonzalez, Sr. and Ofelia Alegria Gonzalez.

Yaya, as she was affectionally known to all who knew her, was a devout Catholic and a member of the St. Peter’s Mission Altar Society who enjoyed spending her time and energy in various church activities. She loved spending time with her family, barbequing, sewing, knitting, and quilting with her quilting friends. Yaya was a loving, generous, and gentle soul who was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Ofelia Gonzalez, Sr.; siblings, Celia Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez, Jr., Juan Gonzalez (Martha), Ruben Gonzalez, Nora Gonzalez, Rogelio Gonzalez, Sr., Arnulfo Gonzalez and Celia Rangel (Joe).

Survivors left to cherish her memories are her children, Roxie Torres (Sonny), Danny Gonzalez (Anna), Rogelio Gonzalez, Jr. (Belinda), Jo Lee Gonzalez (Gail), and Jaime Gonzalez (Tammy); sister, Gloria Cadena; sisters-in-law, Yolanda Gonzalez and Dora Gonzalez; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM at Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St. Alice, TX 78332. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at St. Peter’s Mission in Ben Bolt, Texas all services will conclude at the church. A Graveside service will be held on a later date.
