Esmeralda "Esmie" Salinas Obituary

Esmeralda Aguirre Salinas, also known as “Coach”, “Esmie”, or (her favorite) “Mimi” - passed away unexpectedly on January 12, 2024 at the age of 71 in Corpus Christi, TX at Doctor’s Regional Hospital. She was born on December 16, 1952 in Alice, Texas to Elena and Daniel Aguirre in their home. She was the youngest of 8. Esmeralda was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Esmie was a kind soul with a genuine heart, who always greeted you with a smile and hug. She was the kind of person who would give all she had to help others, especially her family and friends. The gift of giving was a gift in itself for Mimi. She found the joys in life through the simple things. She valued the moment more than the things encircled by it. She loved to laugh, and enjoy her life. She put thought into what she did, and made it a point to always give her time to those she cared for. She was a woman of faith, and trusted God’s plan for her. She lived to serve as God intended. She loved her family more than anything, especially her grand-babies who were the light of her world.

She will be deeply missed by her daughters: Dora Ann Aguirre-Sendejo and Marcie Elizabeth Salinas; her son-in-law: Matt Garza; her only grand-daughter: Lyla Garza, and her grandsons: Haydon Garza and Chayce Garza. Esmie is survived by her brothers: Dan (Sandy) Aguirre and Raul Aguirre; Her sister: Delia (Locho) Garcia; Her nieces: Evie (Robert) Garcia-Rodriguez and Elisa (TJ) Gleeson; Her nephews: Daniel Garcia, Mando Garcia, and Adam (Gabrielle) Aguirre; Her great-nephews who she also adored: Amando “AJ” Garcia, Lucas Garcia, Christopher Rodriguez, Daniel Rodriguez, William Gleeson, Jacob Gleeson and Benjamin Gleeson. Esmie will undoubtedly be missed by numerous friends and extended family not mentioned, but known. She will be greeted at the gates of Heaven by her parents of whom she’s missed for so long, and the two sets of twin siblings she always couldn’t wait to meet.

Esmeralda's educational journey began at St. Joseph Catholic School and continued at Alice High School, where she was the first graduating class of AHS in 1971. She furthered her education at Texas A&I University, earning her Associates in Early Childhood Education, focusing on Physical Education.

Esmie dedicated 32 years of her career to AISD as a PE Coach at Salazar and Schallert Elementary. Her passion for coaching led to numerous Little Olympic wins during her tenure. After retiring from the district, she moved to St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served as the primary Coach for 5 years. She concluded her career at CACost, working as a paraprofessional for 3 years before retiring in May of 2022 to pursue being a full-time Mimi.

Esmie found solace in her faith and was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church her entire life. She recently joined St. Elizabeth Church to support her grandchildren who attend the school, but gravitated between both parishes. She found comfort in listening to her record player through difficult or sweet times. Music was the answer when words couldn’t serve her. She was the life of any party, always dancing the night away - nothing stopped her from moving her body to a good beat. She had a spark for travel, whether it was visiting the beach- camping out in the country- or exploring the bustle of big cities - Esmie was always quick to pack her things and go. She had child-like humor attached to her, being goofy and silly to make others smile and feel at ease. “Coach” was a name given to her on purpose, she could motivate anyone to believe in their true worth, and instilled self value throughout generations of students during her career. A true “go-getter” trend setter! She loved spending time with friends, so often attending lunches, reunions or spending long hours catching up on the phone - staying in touch was high priority. Esmie cherished each day and made the most of every moment, making as many memories as she could with all those she loved.
