The morning of Saturday, April 27th Gerrett A. Klatt Jr., 99, passed peacefully in his home to make his journey to join his wife of 74 years, lnez Gorbet Klatt and his oldest child Ronald. He leaves behind their daughter Lana (Steve Nielson) and son Stephen, granddaughter Shelley Coleman, great grandchildren, Jordan Holsonback and Lauren Darby (Cody Darby), and great-great granddaughters, Hadleigh and Brylee Darby as well as a host of extended family and friends.
He was born to Gerrett and Minnie Klatt on January 24, 1925, in Bluntzer, Texas. He grew up sharing time between his childhood home in Orange Grove and his family’s farm in San Patricio. He was a graduate of Orange Grove High School class of 1942. He joined the US Army and proudly served in WWII where he served mainly as a driver in France and Germany. After returning from the war, he met his wife, Inez at a dance at the Orange Grove Rifle Club. They made Alice, Texas their home but his roots and love for Orange Grove never wavered.
Gerrett began work in the oilfield supply business where he worked for over 40 years and picked up the nickname “Snuffy”. He served as a scout master for many years and was proud that many of his scouts still remembered and appreciated him as grown men. He served his church as a Grand Knight in the fourth degree Knights of Columbus along with countless hours of volunteering with church group and functions. He was a member of several civic organizations, was a proud Veteran and served years on the Veteran Burial Organization traveling all over Texas to honor Veterans.
Gerrett was also a farmer and rancher on his family’s land in San Patricio. He and his wife raised their family with a love of their farming and ranching heritage. He could always be found on a Friday night at an Alice Coyotes football game where he held season tickets for over 50 years or supporting the Orange Grove Bulldogs.
Although he had a very busy life, to his last days, he always had time for his family and friends, was always up for an adventure, and always had a story for anyone who would listen.
