Judith Mae was born on May 17, 1922 in New Ulm, Texas. In 1928, when she was 6, her family moved to Alice to live on the family farm on County Road 625. Her parents were William and Erna Schuette. She had 2 sisters, Leona Wakehouse and Esther Grueber, and a brother, Raymond Schuette.
Judith graduated in 1940 from William Adams High School in Alice. In 1941, she attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas. She was a duchess at the Homecoming Ball that year.
After the war started, she moved to Houston and lived with her brother, Raymond Schuette, and his wife, Selma. She worked at a downtown professional photography shop. While taking photographs one day, she met Herchel E. Palmer, a lieutenant in the Army Air Corp.
She married Herchel Palmer in Lake Charles, Louisiana on February 8, 1944. She returned to Alice while her husband, a pilot, was serving overseas. Herchel was killed in action in December 1944. Their daughter, Sylvia Ann, was born in Alice.
Judith married Werner A. Gohmert of Alice on February 14, 1946. They moved to Austin while Werner attended the University of Texas Law School.
In 1948, they returned to Alice to live and Werner set up his law practice. Their children, Werner A. Gohmert, Jr. (Skipper) and Sheila Christine Harris, were born in Alice.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had been very active in her church work serving on many committees. She was also very active in the Parent-Teachers Association. She worked for the Alice Independent School District in the food service department at Schallert Elementary and Hillcrest Elementary schools from 1977 to 1990.
Judith has 3 children, 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandsons. Those left to cherish her memory are: her daughter: Sylvia Ann Work of Alice; her son, Skipper Gohmert (Patricia Jo) of Kerrville; and her daughter, Sheila Christine (Tad) Harris of Lake Hills and her grand-dog, Shadow.
She will be missed by her two grand-children: Robin Henning of Palm Desert, California and Herbert Gohmert (Tammy), of Kerrville and her four great-grandchildren: Davis Baca and Aaron Baca of Palm Desert, California, William Gohmert of Kerrville, and Lauren Gohmert Canales (Carlos), of San Antonio. Her four special great-great grandsons are Chyler, Carsen, and Caelen Moore and L.J. Canales.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM . A Funeral service at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church 1400 N Texas Blvd, Alice, TX followed by a meal in the parish hall. With private graveside service.
Pallbearers: Herbert Gohmert, William Gohmert, Carlos Canales, Davis Baca, Aaron Baca, Dennis Whitley, Bill Botard, Christopher Menking, and Buzzy Botard.
The family greatly appreciates the loving care provided by the entire staff of Meridian Care of Alice-you became part of mother's family. Atex Hospice of Corpus Christi provided comfort and peace to our mother and her children.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church (general fund) or to the charity of your choice.
