MCGILL, Kathleen (Katy), 82, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2025, into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by the love of her family. Katy was born on September 7, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas as the oldest child of Scott and Stella (Gaines) McGill. She grew up in Alice, Texas and graduated from Alice High School where she was a cheerleader. She attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she studied education and was a cheerleader and member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Katy’s life and legacy were deeply shaped by her childhood days spent at her family’s Santa Rosa Viejo Ranch near Riviera, Texas, where she and her siblings enjoyed many great adventures, riding horses, helping their father and uncles work cattle and rattling up white tailed bucks in the South Texas brush country.
After marrying and starting a family, Katy moved to the Santa Rosa Viejo and built a farming, ranching and thoroughbred and quarter horse business. She owned and raced the foundational thoroughbred mare, Crimson Saint, whose descendants are still dominating thoroughbred racing to this day.
Katy was passionate about her faith and served many years as a teaching director for Community Bible Study in Kingsville, Texas. She loved studying and teaching the Bible and was a gifted lecturer. She authored two books, one of which she co-wrote with her cousin, Mary Dru McGill Burns, which documented the McGill family history.
Katy was a devoted and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Affectionately known to her grandchildren as “Granny,” Katy treasured her time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often hosting tea parties, doing art projects, playing card games, watching movies, holding storytelling sessions filled with pearls of Granny’s wisdom, and passing on to the next generations her McGill family recipes.
Katy will always be remembered by her family and friends for her beauty, her strength, her faith, her kindness, her cooking, her intelligence and her adventurous spirit. Above all, she will be remembered for the love she shared with all who knew her. She will be sorely missed and forever remembered.
Katy is survived by her six children: Kathleen Hebert (Jeffery) of Vinton, Louisiana; Lucina Botond (Andrew) of Burnet, Texas; Jane Braugh of Sun Valley, California; Roger Braugh, Jr. (Christine) of Corpus Christi, Texas; Sarah Kennedy (Will) of Georgetown, Texas; Scott Enyart of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her sixteen grandchildren: Greg Schonefeld (Ellie) of Ankney, Iowa; Noelle Schonefeld (Eric Jasso) of Los Angeles, California; Sally Schonefeld (Don Onyeokeziri) of Los Angeles, California; Natalie Farmer (Kyle) of Austin, Texas; Barrett Schonefeld (Kenzie) of Austin, Texas; Will, Henry & Thomas Botond of Burnet, Texas; Mackenzie Dow of Sun Valley, California; Audrey, Evelyn & Cullen Braugh of Corpus Christi, Texas; Sloane & Clay Kennedy of Georgetown, Texas; Lindsey Hebert of Vinton, Louisiana; and Isabella Enyart of Katy, Texas. Katy is also survived by her younger sister, Janey Weakly (Pete) of Spring Branch, Texas and her younger brother, Scott McGill of Corpus Christi, Texas. Katy was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves behind many adored great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
We sincerely thank family and friends for all their love and support throughout Katy’s journey. Katy will be laid to rest at the Alice Cemetery alongside her mother and father, after a service at Episcopal Church of the Advent, where Katy was confirmed and married, and where her mother’s funeral was held.
