Maria G. Bernal

Maria “Mary” G. Bernal, 89, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her San Antonio home, in the presence of her beloved family on September 7th, 2024. She was born to Mercedes R. Garcia and Blas Garcia Sr. On December 3rd, 1934 in Jim Wells County. During her time living in Ben Bolt, Mary was an immensely dedicated and active member of the Saint Peter‘s Church. She was a graduate of Ben Bolt Palito-Blanco High School and she was known for her excellent skills in volleyball and basketball. Mary was a selfless person; not only did she enjoy making tamales and pan de polvo for those she loved, she cherished teaching everyone how to make them as well. She loved mariachi music and dancing (together and separately).

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel D. Bernal; daughter, Nelda B. Godinez; parents, Mercedes R. Garcia, Blas Garcia Sr.; and siblings, Blas Garcia Jr., Consuelo Arizpe (Jesus), Eglantina Garza (Jose), Gustavo Garcia (Ida), Jose Alonso Garcia (Belia), Rogerio Garcia, Yolanda Garcia (Olivia).

Mary is survived by her daughter Brenda M. Bernal (Sophia); grandchildren, Hector D. Godinez, Bianca E. Godinez; sisters-in-law, Raphaela Garcia, Lamar Bernal Sanchez, Janie C. Garcia; son-in-law, Hector Godinez; several nieces and nephews; and her favorite pet, Ginobli.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM . A Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM at Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St. Alice, Texas 78332. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Ben Bolt, Texas at 10:00 AM, followed by Christian Burial at Calaveras Cemetery in Ben Bolt.

Honored to serve as pallbearers will be JJ Arizpe, Baldemar Bernal, Juan Bernal, Alex Charles, Tony Cuevas III, Alonzo Garcia, Joey Garza, and Anthony Trejo.
