Martha Mae Leary Slater, 88, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2021. She was born on May 19, 1932 in Gary, Indiana, to Lovell and Ella Baas Leary.
In March of 1948 she and her parents moved from Gary, Indiana to Kingsville, TX. In May 1951 she graduated from Kingsville High School. Martha married John Slater at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church on June 30, 1951.
She was a member of the St. John Catholic Church in Orange Grove, Texas. Besides being a busy homemaker, her interest included: Altar Society, Tuesday Study Club member, playing dominos, painting pictures, and sewing. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mrs. Slater was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marjorie Leary Armstrong; and brother, Raymond Leary.
Survivors include her loving husband of 69 years, John Slater of Orange Grove; children, Randy (Eileen) Slater of Bryan, Donald (Amanda) Slater of Dallas, Kathy Slater of Redrock, Allen (Vicki) Slater of San Antonio, and Nancy Slater (Kevin) Oswald of Manchaca; grandchildren, Amy Slater (Andrew) Cook of Spring, Caitlin Slater (Channing) Williford of Austin, Karl Slater (Chancy) of Kyle, Casey Oswald (Rick) Jewell, Jessica Oswald, and Cassandra McAden (Jeff) Altenbern of College Station; great-grandchildren, Jace Cook of Spring.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, February 28, 2021 with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:00 PM at Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St. Alice, TX. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 1, 2021 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church; Father Patrick Donohoe celebrant. Christian Burial will follow at St. John of the Cross Cemetery.
