Mildred Helen Smith, 92, of Orange Grove, TX. passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025 in Alice, TX. She was born December 18, 1932 in the Leona Community in Nueces County, TX, the oldest child of Albina (Bartos) and Joseph Nesloney.
Mildred graduated from Orange Grove High School where her favorite sport was volleyball; she was known for her powerful serve skimming fast over the net. In high school she met the love of her life Freddie Smith. They were married in 1950 and shared 74 wonderful years together. She retired from Corpus Christi Credit Bureau after 13 years. A Christian of incredible faith, Mildred was involved with the Women’s Circle at St. John Lutheran Church in Robstown and later with the Ruth Circle at First Evangelical Church of Orange Grove. She was a founding member of the Orange Grove Ladies Quilting Club who made quilts for BokenKamp Children’s Shelter, ABC Quilts for the babies of Driscoll Children’s Hospital and Lutheran World Relief.
Mildred loved rooting for the Calallen Wildcats, Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Astros. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a great cook and an avid dog lover. She especially enjoyed going to the family lake house and Leakey, TX where there were many family gatherings. She enjoyed fashion, especially bright clothes and, with her sister Peggy, became co-owner of the Country Boutique in Orange Grove.
Survivors left to cherish her memories include husband Freddie Smith; children David Smith, Jack (Helena) Smith, Debbie (Dickie) Holloway, and Sheri Smith; grandchildren Rachel (Jay) Lopez-Rogina, Jamie (Bryce) Alexander, Jeremy (Amber) Smith, Kellie (Michael) Workman, Brian (Courtney) Smith, Derek (Sarah) Smith and Christina (Justin) Noland; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; sisters Joann Mussman, Peggy Meyer, Janie Hollon, Carolyn Dye, and brother Sonny Nesloney; countless nieces and nephews and her favorite lap dog Jorgee. She was preceded in death by her parents and oldest son, Joe Allen Smith.
Family will be receiving friends on Friday, February 7, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Holmgreen Mortuary. A Funeral Service will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Orange Grove, TX on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 2:00 PM, followed by Christian Burial at Sons of Hermann Cemetery.
