Norma Lee Hackfeld beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and close friends at her home in Orange Grove, Texas after a courageous and lengthy battle with multiple illnesses including her most recent diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Born on October 23, 1950 in McAllen, Texas, Norma and her family moved to Alice, Texas, and eventually to Orange Grove, Texas where she would build a life deeply rooted in love, family, and friendship.
Norma attended Orange Grove High School, where she graduated as the Class of 1969 Valedictorian. Her high school years were filled with achievement and spirit--Norma was Assistant Head Cheerleader, Football Sweetheart, Valentine and Homecoming Court Attendants, Newspaper Assistant Editor, and was honored in Senior Who's Who and Who's Who in American ·High Schools.
It was during these formative years that Norma not only met her lifelong best friends, but also met the love of her life, Marvin Hackfeld, Jr. Norma and Jr. were married on June 7, 1969 at Faith Church in Orange Grove, Texas. Soon after, Jr. was drafted into the United States Army to serve in Vietnam. While serving overseas, Norma welcomed their daughter, Holly Gaylynn on September 18, 1970. After Jr.'s Honorable Discharge, the couple settled in Orange Grove and welcomed their son Keith Martin on January 15, 1973.
Norma pursued her love of the medical profession by attending the Del Mar College Nursing Program and eventually working for Northwest Regional Hospital for sixteen years until her retirement. To many in the Orange Grove community, she was affectionately known as "Dr. Norm"--always ready with an answer, remedy, or a reassuring word.
Though she enjoyed her work in the medical field and the friendships she forged there, Norma's highest priorities and loves of her life were Jr., Holly, and Keith. She was a devoted wife and endlessly loving mother. Norma's life was filled with little joys for Holly and Keith--shopping trips, baking elaborate birthday cakes, hosting girly sleepovers and skateboard boy hangouts, Jeopardy showdowns, Trivia Pursuit challenges, supporting their educational endeavors and careers, and caring for her grandpups, Ingrid, Piper, and Buford. Each moment carefully captured in scrapbooks and photo albums--every memory lovingly preserved.
Norma often reminisced of her love of weekends watching football and movies with Jr. and visiting with friends, family reunions and holidays, raising Holly and Keith with her friends and their children, and vacationing with friends and family.
Norma found comfort in her daily Bible verse readings and enjoyed relishing in crossword puzzles, watching comedy, trivia, and game shows, delving into a good book, treasuring her time with friends, cherishing her sister talks with Loy and Terri, witnessing Natalie grow, spending time perusing magazines looking for Holly's next recipe, giggling at Nathan's teasing and silliness, and finding joy in the beauty and symbolism of butterflies.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, Jr., her son, Keith, her mother Oma Lee Ellington, her brother, Chuck Ellington, her sister, Joyce Carter, her brother, Wesley Yandell, her niece Christina Ellington, and great-nephew, Gaege Raska.
