Refugia Barrera Obituary

Refugia “Cookie” G. Barrera, who was taken from us far too soon at the age of 51, gained her heavenly angel wings on January 19th, 2025. She was a beloved daughter, Mom, Nana, sister, Godmother, aunt, and friend whose spirit and love will forever be cherished by all who knew her.

Cookie was born on April 7th, 1973. She was a vibrant soul whose heart was as big as her smile. Cookie graduated from Alice High School in 1991. She took great pride in playing the saxophone and being first chair in Honor’s Band. She felt an even greater sense of pride in her family. They were the center of her world, and her love for her babies and grand babies was immeasurable. She lived life with passion and grace, whether it was spent at an arena watching her children team rope, relaxing near a body of water, burning a hole across the dance floor or singing her favorite songs with those she loved. Her laughter, warmth, and adventurous spirit were infectious, and she had a unique ability to make everyone around her feel special. She had a remarkable gift of bringing people together and always ready to lend a hand. She leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and cherished memories.

Refugia “Cookie” Barrera is preceded in death by her father, Felix L. Barrera, her paternal grandfather Raul Barrera, grandmother Consuelo Lopez Barrera, maternal grandparents Adan and Dolores Gonzalez, step father Rafael Paz, and one granddaughter, Brylee Levay Trejo.

She is survived by her mother, Dolores Gonzalez Paz; sisters Ann Frances Ramirez and Sabrina Barrera; her brothers Lee (Stephanie) Barrera and Felix Barrera Jr. ; children Randy (Ashley) Trejo, Reba (Javier) Garcia and Jose (Sofia) Ramirez; grandchildren, Nayeli Trejo, Hayden Ramirez, Jaycee Salinas, Braylin Trejo, Peyton Trejo, Paisley Garcia, Camila Lozano, Camila Ramirez and Elena Ramirez; nieces Samantha (Johnny) Hernandez, Samuel (Nicole) Navarro Jr, Maria Refugia Navarro and numerous family and friends who she loved and deeply adored.

Though she may have been taken too soon, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Cookie’s legacy will continue to inspire us all to live with love, laughter, and passion—just as she did every day of her life.
