Selina "Sally" Vela Ramirez

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Selina ‘Sally’ Vela Ramirez, age 62, after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, May 16, 2025 at home surrounded by her loving family. Sally was a beloved daughter born on February 8, 1963, in Alice, Texas to Johnny and Emilia (Hinojosa) Vela.

She attended Salazar Elementary and was a graduate of Alice High School. Sally worked as a bookkeeper and secretary, dedicating herself to her work with care and precision. Sally was a member of Santo Nino de Atocha Mission and Guadalupe Church. 

Sally loved being a mother to her son Juan Sergio and a grandmother to her granddaughter Madilynn and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved cooking and crafting. As many who knew Sally, she was always there with a listening ear and heartfelt advice, offering wisdom and support to family and friends. She cherished family gatherings and delighted in hosting game nights as well as creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love. Her favorite saying was “La pinche palma” during our Loteria game night. She also enjoyed camping and fishing with her family during trips that brought everyone together in nature. Last but not least Sally enjoyed going to the maquinitas. 

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to MD Anderson Cancer Center and Altus Hospice; Her son, and Her sisters for being her caretakers. 

She will be deeply missed by all her family, friends and everyone who knew her. Sally’s memory will live on in our hearts of those she touched.    

She is preceded in death by her father Juan (Johnny) Vela Sr. and her brother David. H. Vela. 

Sally leaves behind her son Juan Sergio Vela; the father of her son, Juan Vela; her granddaughter Madilynn Nikole Vela; her mother Emilia H. Vela; siblings, Sylvia Vela Trejo, Nora Vela Mendez (Mario Mendez), Jilma I Vela Lopez (Luis Lopez), Juan Vela Jr. (Lisa D. Vela) and Baltazar Vela (Elena Vela); as well as many beloved numerous nieces and nephews. 

A Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 12:00 PM and a Funeral Service to be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Friday May 23, 2025 at Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main Street Alice, Texas. All services will conclude at Holmgreen Mortuary.
