Evelyn Carol Buxkemper Dubose passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. She was born on July 27, 1921 to Otto and Frieda Buxkemper in Frelsburg, Texas. She was 97 years old.
Evelyn was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Alice. She was past member of the St. Elizabeth Mother’s Club, 4-H Club sponsor, St. Elizabeth Altar Society, the 42 Club, and Alice Garden Club.
She worked during World War II in the war effort with her sisters as “Rosie the Riveter”, repairing airplanes.
Evelyn married Clarence Dubose in 1942 and awaited his return from the war in Europe in 1945. They had four daughters for whom she designed and made their dresses. She also enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning, cooking and crocheting. In her late years, she learned to paint in oils from her cousin, JoEtta McCollum, and shared beautiful pictures of her favorite flower, roses, with her family. After her husband passed away in 2002, she continued to maintain their country home and landscape, pursued her interests, wrote poetry, and enjoyed her grandchildren. Her spirit of capability and curiosity set an example they will not soon forget.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence H. Dubose; a daughter, Shirley Greer; two brothers, Lawrence Buxkemper and Vernon Buxkemper; three sisters, Lillie Maglothin, Mary Selix, and Celestine Meyes; and one son-in-law, Harry Wright.
Left to cherish their memory of her are her three daughters and their families, Joan (Vic) Owen of Richardson, Texas, Doris Wright of Kingsville, Texas, and Linda Lane of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; her brother, Mervin Buxkemper of Bandera, Texas and her sister, Josie Palmer of Cottage Grove, Oregon.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers who made her more comfortable including Kleberg County Nursing and Rehab and Kindred Hospice; and the ministry to the sick from St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Alice and St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church in Kingsville.
