Mrs. Huberta Sain Boyd, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died in her home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. She was 82 years old.
She was born on July 11, 1936 in Alice, Texas to the Honorable Sheriff and Mrs. Hubert Talmadge Sain, she was a descendant of rancher William Adams of the famous “Adams Brothers,” who were members of one of the first pioneer families of Alice and the surrounding South Texas region, and of Sarah Randolph Bradley Dodson, who moved to Texas along with her family as part of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” and who designed the first lone-star Texas flag in September 1835, which flew over the building where her husband, Archelaus Bynum Dodson, met as a member of the Convention of 1836 and helped declare independence from Mexico. Her grandfather, George R. Adams was a long-time merchant in Alice.
Huberta graduated from William Adams High School in 1954 whereafter she attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas. During her days at SMU, she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was presented in Corpus Christi’s Buccaneer Days celebration as a duchess and a debutante. She married Bill Butler in 1957 and received her Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville in 1959.
In 1960, she married Dr. John Cornelius Turnham, Jr. in Alice. She proudly reared their three children, John Hubert, Mary Barbara and Jane Elizabeth, and hosted many memorable gatherings at their home at 1808 Walker Street in Alice. After Dr. Turnham’s untimely death in 1973, Huberta moved to Corpus where, in 1980, she married Mr. W. Monte Boyd with whom she enjoyed a long and happy marriage. She was a witty, genteel and immaculately dressed, strong-willed lady who maintained her home and courtyard with the utmost care and, until the end of her life, did things her way. Her greatest joy was the happiness and well-being of children and grandchildren and she was delighted by the stories of their successes and was always there with advice and reassurance in their low moments.
Huberta was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Turnham, Jr.; parents, Hubert Talmadge Sain and Aleene Adams Sain; her sister, Barbara Sain; beloved grandparents, George R. Adams and Mayme (Mary Ann) Wright Adams and Eulysses Asa Sain and Julia Carter Sain; and by daughter-in-law, Terri Turnham.
Huberta leaves behind her husband of 38 years, W. Monte Boyd; children, John H. Turnham of New Braunfels, Barbara Turnham Rodriguez (Ruben) of Brownsville and Jane Turnham Manning (Rusty) of San Antonio; grandchildren, John Russell Manning of New Orleans, Mark Joseph Manning of San Antonio, Sarah Turnham Newman (Michael) of Seguin, Mercedes Rodriguez of College Station and Benjamin Sabas Rodriguez, a student at Texas A&M, College Station.
